History

The biomechanics group was set up by the North West Regional Heads of Service group, as one of a number of groups aimed at clinical effectiveness. North West Regional Heads nominated interested specialist podiatrists from their Trusts. The group critically discussed the biomechanical assessment process, compared assessment tools, and the need for a care pathway for orthoses prescribing. This would be the “gold standard” route through biomechanics and orthoses prescribing. Patient information leaflets were worked through as to appropriateness and clarity for the patient attending for a biomechanical assessment, and receiving insoles.

Achievements to date:

The group developed a two day training package on basic biomechanics:

This was delivered at Salford University to two members of each North West NHS Trust biomechanics team, followed by local dissemination through trusts. The training included the provision of a CD ROM with in-depth notes and PowerPoint presentation.

Gold Standard:
The group has developed a proposed “gold standard” service provision / waiting times booklet for biomechanics treatment

Interactive Podiatric Biomechanics, Web Site:

Following the provision of the training package many options were discussed for follow on work. The group agreed to start work on producing a condition pathway to help podiatrists on general clinics when seeing patients with biomechanical complaints. This web site was developed as a medium through which many podiatrists in general clinics could be reached, either through intranet sites or the internet.
